Google Product Studio: Is It a Game-Changer or a Gimmick?
An honest review of Google's AI image editor in Merchant Center. We dive deep into when you should use it, and when you should run for the hills (or a better tool).
Google Product Studio: A PPC Expert's Honest Review
Hello there fellow Google Ads maestro!
Alfred here seasoned veteran and a fellow AI geek.
Let's dive into this tool together.
So, Google dropped a new toy in our sandbox. 🧸
It's called Product Studio, and it's nestled right inside your Google Merchant Center.
The promise?
Use AI to magically transform your bland product photos into stunning, click-worthy masterpieces.
As a fellow PPC expert who's constantly fighting the good fight for better CTRs, my first thought was:
Is this the one?
The tool that finally solves our creative headaches without needing a $5,000 photography budget?
I rolled up my sleeves and dove in.
And let me tell you, it's a mixed bag.
So let's have a real chat about it. When is Product Studio your new best friend, and when will it just waste your precious time?
First, The Journey: Getting to Product Studio
Before you even get to play with the AI, you have to find it. And it's… a bit of a mess.
Here's the path you have to walk for every single image:
- Pop open your Merchant Center.
- Navigate to the Products tab.
- Find and select the one product you want to edit.
- Click Edit product.
- Scroll down to the image and click Transform image with AI.
Phew. You made it. Now you can select your image, describe your product, and tell the AI what scene you want to create.
It feels a bit like a hidden Easter egg, right? This process alone tells you a lot about who this tool is currently for.

When Product Studio Is Actually Pretty Great 👍
Let's be fair, it's not all bad. In a few specific situations, Product Studio is genuinely useful.
1. You only need to edit a couple of images.
Got 5 or fewer products that need a little love?
Perfect. The manual, one-by-one process won't feel like a punishment.
It's a great way to dip your toes into AI-generated backgrounds without any commitment.
2. You just need a simple background refresh.
Want to change that boring white background to a solid color?
Or maybe place your product on a simple wooden table? Product Studio handles these simple requests pretty well.
Think of it as the "salt and pepper" of image editing.
It's good for basic seasoning.
For example, putting a lip balm on a table with some rose petals is a task it can probably handle.
Simple, clean, and effective.
You definitely don't want to use it for complex scenes.

3. Your product is easy to work with.
If your product has clean lines and a simple shape (like a bottle, a box, or a candle), the AI does a decent job of cutting it out and placing it in a new scene.
It's a quick way to add a bit of lifestyle flair to an otherwise sterile shot.

When to Politely Say "No, Thanks" to Product Studio 👎
This is where my Google Ads expert alarm bells started ringing.
"Alfreeeeeeed you don't want to use product studio!"
The tool's limitations become very clear, very quickly.
1. You need to edit images in bulk.
This is the big one. There is no bulk option.
Imagine your client has a feed with 200 products. Are you going to go through that 5-step process for every single one?
I'll answer for you: Heck no. You have campaigns to run, bids to manage, and a life to live.
For any real-world e-commerce store with a decent-sized catalog, Product Studio is a non-starter.
This is where you need a dedicated tool built for scale.
You have two options:
1.1. You can use the Vertex AI API
This is the most technical option. You'll need to write code to automate the process.
Wrestling with the Vertex AI API is not for the faint of heart.
You'll need to:
- Understand the API
- Write code to automate the process
- Deal with the API's rate limits
Here is a guide to it.
1.2. You can use a tool like BackdropBoost
This is the easiest option. You can use our tool to bulk edit your images.
You could wrestle with the Vertex AI API if you're feeling adventurous (and have a developer on standby).
Or
You could use a tool (ahem, like BackdropBoost) that's designed for bulk processing from the ground up.
We completly support bulk editing and you only need to upload a product feed.
Which you already have, since, well you are using Google Shopping.
2. You need a complex or high-quality scene.
The moment you ask for something more ambitious, the quality falls off a cliff.
Want to show your product in use?
Or place it in a specific, styled environment like a modern living room or a high-end photo studio?
Good luck.
I tried place a solar battery on a balcony.
The results were… let's just say, "abstract art." 🎨
The AI struggles with complex objects, perspective, and maintaining a photorealistic look.
You'll get warped lines, strange shadows, and an overall "fake" vibe that can hurt brand credibility more than a white background ever would.

In these cases, you're far better off with more advanced AI image generators or, frankly, traditional product photography.
The Verdict: A Great Toy, Not a Professional Tool
So, where does that leave us?
Google's Product Studio is a fantastic introduction to AI image generation for merchants who are just starting out or have very minimal needs. It's free, it's integrated, and it's good enough for simple tasks.
But for us, the agencies and freelancers who manage multiple clients and large product feeds?
It's a gimmick. A fun one, but not a tool that will change your workflow or deliver the scalable results your clients pay you for.
The real power comes from using tools that understand the demands of e-commerce at scale. You need bulk processing, consistent quality, and creative control.
So go ahead, give Product Studio a try on a couple of images.
See what it can do. But when you're ready to get serious about transforming your clients' shopping feeds, you'll know it's time to graduate to a real, professional-grade solution.
Your sanity (and your clients' ROAS) will thank you.
